The Winged Victory of Samothrace is one of the most praised pieces of art and a marvelous example of Hellenistic sculpture. Discovered in 1863, it depicts the goddess Nike, a goddess of triumph and victory, and was made to commemorate a sea battle. Standing about 8 feet tall, it has been on display at the Louvre since 1884.
