The designs and motifs on these pieces date from pre 1492, before Columbus discovered the Americas. The Nahuatl tribe who carve these artifacts moved down from Mexico to settle in the fertile land beneath Volcano Masaya, Nicaragua. They are descended from the Aztecs. They brought their clay carving technique with them and have made it their own over several thousand years.
