Skilled craftsman, often third & fourth generation make these beautiful decorative boxes in Egypt. A round shaped wooden decorative box with a lid, this box measures 8 inches in diameter. These decorative boxes are made of wood imported from Eastern Europe, and mother of pearl imported from Asia as well as the Red Sea.

From full size boats that were buried with the Pharaoh to small amulets in Pharonic times, the Egyptians have been masters in woodworking for thousands of years. Mother of pearl inlaid boxes and furniture, combines the art of woodworking with the fine, intricate detail work of inlay. During the Ottoman period, grand pieces of inlaid furniture were made for the palaces. In the 18th and 19th century wood and inlaid sandals were made for the ladies of the harem to use in the bathhouses.
