At the heart of this ancient craft is the technique of resist dyeing.  Before weaving or dying, a master designer measures and marks the design scheme on lengths of yarn. The parts that should remain undyed (or dyed in a different color) are bound tightly with a dye resistant material or sealed with rubber or wax. The yarn then goes into dyeing vats. When it is dry, the bound areas are uncovered, revealing the design in relief. The process is repeated depending on the number of colors required. The yarn, now ready for weaving, is placed on the loom as the warp. If a symmetric effect is desired, threads will be painstakingly adjusted until they line up perfectly with each other. Such is the accuracy of this process that at first look, the patterns appear to have been printed rather than woven!
