A striking hand crafted set of four nesting tables from the artisans of Saharanpur, India. This is a set of four tables. The largest is 17.5 inches high with table top size of about 11.5 X 17.5 and the smallest is about 8.5(l) X 8.5(w) and 14 inches high, with a tiny drawer tucked in. All the tables are hand crafted and have delicate patterns in brass on the surface and legs. Specially treated wood is used for hand carving to ensure that there is no splitting or cracking.
Cultural Description / Significance
The specialty of their craft is etching intricate brass inlay work on to wood, which gives a charming period look to furniture. The technique used by Saharanpur artisans is a blend of ancient Indian, Mughal and Persian styles. Once a summer resort of the Mughals, today Saharanpur is a developed industrial town famous for its wooden artifacts and furniture. Located just 120 kms from Delhi, it exports these items to many countries. Saharanpur's distinctive vine leaf pattern on Sheesham wood and floral or geometric carvings with inlay work are in great demand all over the world.
