Product Description
Truly a rare find - with only three pieces acquired, this African chair comes from the Ivory Coast. Low overall height of about 26 inches from the base to the tip of the back, the seat diameter measure 14 inches. The back of the chair is removable and is held onto the seat using a pin as shown. Each of three chairs vary slightly in design. Completely handmade, minor variations and defects adds to the artistic appeal of the chairs.
The age of these chairs are difficult to determine since African tribes in Ivory Coast usually bury their wood for a long time.
Cultural Description / Significance
The Ivory Coast "Cote D, Ivoir" was colonized by the French until they gained back their independence around the 1960. The Northern part where this tribe resided were even more forcefully colonized because of the great talent of their people. This tribe under the influence of the French cultures are one of the greatest carvers in Africa. The fact that this chair is carved with a removable backing tells us that it was used by tribal chiefs or by "Medicine" men.
