Cultural Description / Significance
The art of applique is believed to have made its way into western India from either Europe or Arabia via trade contacts. Applique work became widely popular in the states of Rajasthan, Gujrat and Orissa. These bed covers are made in Rajasthan. The Rajputs and other communities produced canopies and quilt covers employing this technique. The decorative appliques vary from stylized birds to geometric patterns.
