The skill and patience required for mother of pearl inlay work thrives in Egypt today. These decorative boxes are made of wood imported from Eastern Europe, and mother of pearl imported from Asia as well as the Red Sea. The chest shaped decorative box measures 6.5 inches long and 4.5 inches wide with a height of about 4 inches. Comes in a rich dark finish with velvet lined interiors.
Handmade: No two pieces are identical. Minor variations and defects add to the character of the piece.

From full size boats that were buried with the Pharaoh to small amulets in Pharonic times, the Egyptians have been masters in woodworking for thousands of years. Mother of pearl inlaid boxes and furniture, combines the art of woodworking with the fine, intricate detail work of inlay. During the Ottoman period, grand pieces of inlaid furniture were made for the palaces. In the 18th and 19th century wood and inlaid sandals were made for the ladies of the harem to use in the bathhouses.
