Cultural Description / Significance
For centuries, Camel Saddles have played an important role in a nomadic lifestyle. Over the recent years, the saddles have been modified more for home use as a stool or chair then for riding a camel. These saddles are made in family owned workshops and are fairly traded. A Collaborative effort of two families, one making the wood frame and the other providing the leather cushion. Both Artisan families live and work in Cairo, in the area of the Khan el-Khalili market. The market was established in 1382 by the Emir Djaharks el-Khalili. These families have been making the camel saddles for 3 generations (more than 70 years).
