Cultural Description / Significance
Nomadic tribes in Rajasthan have traditionally been playing musical instruments on the street, living on money handed out to them by patrons. In medieval India, prominent landholders in Rajasthan inherited nomadic musicians along with their land. While the landholders took care of the musicians' food, shelter and other needs, the musicians would sing about the family's lineage and deeds. Neglect of the musicians would result in the musicians' breaking their instruments and burying them in front of the landowner's house before going out in search of other patrons.
